Wal-Mart To Sell $399 Ubuntu Linux-based Laptop with Google Operating System
Happy days:

Everex, whose $199 gOS-based gPC desktop sold out at Wal-Mart in record time late last year, has now introduced a gOS-based 2lb ultra-mobile laptop that it plans to sell at Wal-Mart for $399 starting January 25.

The Ubuntu Linux-based gOS operating system from Good OS LLC (www.thinkgos.com) includes so many Google applications like Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google News Google Maps and YouTube that it's often referred to as the Google operating system. It also includes Firefox, Skype, Facebook and OpenOffice 2.3.

I certainly hope there are no Walmarts in the UK. They're the plague of the modern world. They have the lowest prices but also put all the small businesses out of business.

I had a feeling they were like that. I think Asda (Brit company) is part of their empire? Anyway, this signifies another nail in the MicroLimp monopoly coffin.

It is the deals with major sellers and manufacturers that has moved linux from a minority interest into a valid alternative. It's always been the best web server, and the likes of Google run entirely on it, but until Ubuntu got involved your average PC user couldn't realistically rely on free Linux. Now they can :)
